Brief:
This large, sloped site presented many benefits to the design process with a large front setback offering privacy and a wide street frontage with garden and bay views all located under a pleasant Spotted Gum canopy.
The existing building however, consisted of very dark and compartmentalised spaces with limited connections and access to the front garden and rear pool areas. The clients were also experiencing discomfort during summer and winter months with the lack of cross ventilation and light though most areas.
Solution:
The existing house was to be completely demolished and redesigned to take maximum advantage of the sites many favourable aspects. The new two storey house incorporated a master room with ensuite, two bedrooms, study, rumpus complete with gym area and open plan living spaces, with improved connections to outdoor living areas.
Extensive glazing was used to increase visual connections to the garden and pool areas, and natural materials such as sandstone and timber were used to create warmth and appeal.
The differing roof levels allowed for high level glazing, which let light penetrate further into the living spaces. It was important to the client that the house did not seem monumental from the street, and the scale did not over shadow the rear yard and pool area.
The final design is a substantial family home, which takes advantage of all the site's best characteristics to create open and light spaces that are warm in winter and cool in summer.
