The concept for this interior design concentrated on the integration of many elements to create a streamlined and uncluttered finish, which was crucial in achieving the illusion of space without sacrificing on functional components such as storage.
The interior design to the front and older part of the house has been maintained with traditional cornices and skirting with a detailed archway becoming the transition point into the contrasting contemporary interior addition where the majority of works were carried out.
Integrating storage into the design was a strong part of the brief given by the client. Comments and feedback thus far have emphasized on how the layout incorporates a lot of storage without revealing that it does. The storage requirement hasn't become a feature of the spaces, but has managed to closely follow the brief. The fridge and dishwasher have also been integrated and hidden in the kitchen design allowing the kitchen to maintain flush and clean lines in keeping with the rest of the interior.
A basic home automation (C-Bus) system was proposed for handling the entire lighting and electrical system, which minimises the size and location of switching, creating clean and uninterrupted wall lines. It also allows maximum flexibility for users with more control over spaces and most importantly, provides future proofing.
An innovative, integrated speaker system was proposed in the living room, where the speakers become part of the wall and are plastered and painted over becoming completely unseen. This allowed the client to have a full speaker system incorporated into the design without any fixtures dominating the space or wall lines. The design also conceals the entire TV and sound equipment in easily accessible resessed wall storage surrounding the TV, removing the need for floor units, which would have reduced the floor area and cluttered the living room.
The raked ceiling became a strong feature of the renovation both inside & outside. It was important that ceiling fixtures were kept to a minimum to reduce any distractions to the clean ceiling line.
The completed design is an ideal example of a successful contemporary and light filled addition to an 'ordinary' and cramped semi.
