Earth covered homes could be your safe-haven during a bushfire, and an alternative solution to consider if you are building or rebuilding your home near the bush.

Traditional home design and construction methods may not provide enough protection during an extreme bushfire - even if they meet BAL FZ (flame zone) construction.

Earth covered homes sit above and below ground, so just the perimeter walls and windows need to be protected, which can be achieved with drop-down fire curtains and drenchers. This type of home design can provide the safe-haven you need to stay on-site and avoid having to evacuate and risk losing your home and belongings.

Earth covered homes can easily resist ember attack and are insulated against radiant heat. 600mm of earth significantly increases the level of insulation, and with a concrete structure to support it, the house is much stronger and more stable.

Mains, tank or pool water can be used to feed the perimeter drenchers which wet the drop down fire curtains for increased protection.
