Beach House

The brief

Paradise on the beach.

Backing directly onto Fishermans Beach, this brand new home has all the character of a traditional timber beach house — built to last. Constructed of concrete and brick under a beautiful timber weatherboard skin, it won't wash away in a storm.

Being a battle-axe shaped block, there is no street frontage. The facade faces east, enjoying spectacular ocean views just steps from the sand. There is no more exciting place to be when the weather turns — standing on the deck overlooking the ocean is captivating.

Our clients wanted something in timber with a quirky beach house character, big entertaining decks, and holiday house features. Setting into the hill allowed us to achieve three full storeys, with generous storage for boards, boats, bikes, and gym equipment.

Perfect design for the block — built to last.

The design thinking

A beach house built to last a century.

The constraint of a battle-axe block — with no street presence — became the design's greatest asset. All energy was directed toward the east-facing facade and its relationship to the ocean. The home unfolds as you move toward the beach, opening up with each level to frame ever-better views.

Building in concrete and brick beneath a timber-clad skin was a deliberate choice: the character of a traditional beach cottage with the durability of a permanent home. This is a house designed to be handed down.
