Beach House
The brief
A weatherboard beach house for a sloping block.
The site faces north to the front and slopes substantially down from the street to the rear. An old single-storey home with no parking occupied the block, and our clients wanted a weatherboard-style beach house with level street access and covered parking.
We started by providing level street access to a new double carport with a butterfly roof — creating a signature entry element that reads from the street. The living areas are open and flowing, every bedroom gets north sun and cross ventilation, and the sloping site creates district views from the upper living levels.
The design thinking
A classic form, designed for a difficult site.
The weatherboard palette is deeply coastal — it belongs in Freshwater. The design challenge was making it work on a steeply sloping north-facing block that drops away from the street.
The butterfly-roofed carport was the key move: it provides level access from the street while signalling the weatherboard character of the house within, and the stepping of the house down the slope creates a series of distinct floor levels — each with its own north-facing deck and view.
