New home · 6 Bundoon Lane, Manly
8 Star House
The brief
8 stars without compromise.
Achieving an 8-star energy rating — the highest level in the NatHERS system — without sacrificing space, light, or the amenity expected of a Manly home was the central challenge of this project.
The response is a home that wears its sustainability lightly. Careful orientation, high-performance glazing, cross ventilation, and passive solar design work together to achieve the rating — while the architecture is simply a good contemporary home on a Manly lane.
The design thinking
High performance, no asterisks.
8-star homes sometimes look like they’re trying too hard to be sustainable. This one doesn’t. The passive solar principles are embedded in the orientation, the shading, the glazing — they’re invisible in the finished home, which is simply a well-made, comfortable place to live.
That’s the goal: sustainability as a baseline, not a feature. A home on Manly’s lanes should be great to live in first, and good for the planet as a consequence.
