Facade renovation & addition · Clontarf, Sydney
Castle Rock House
The brief
Bigger views, better entry.
Castle Rock House is a facade refresh combined with a much larger front balcony designed to capture the water views available from the upper level. We also enclosed the garage and redesigned the entry sequence to present a resolved street address.
The site is BAL 40 bushfire affected, which shaped every material and detail decision. Bushfire-compliant cladding, glazing, and soffits were specified throughout — not as afterthoughts, but as defining features of the design.
The result is a home that engages confidently with its elevated Clontarf site: the new balcony is generous, the views are unobstructed, and the entry feels considered for the first time.
A facade refresh, and the addition of a much larger front balcony to take in the water views. BAL 40 bushfire affected.
Design story
Designing for fire country.
The Northern Beaches escarpment is spectacular but demanding. BAL 40 affected sites require bushfire attack level compliance from every external element — cladding, windows, roof, eaves, decking. At Castle Rock House, we treated these requirements as a design brief rather than a checklist.
The material palette is honest and restrained: metal cladding, bushfire-rated glazing, and concealed soffits that resolve cleanly at the balcony edge. The enlarged balcony transforms the home's relationship with its bush setting and the water views beyond.
