Renovation & upper level addition · Queenscliff, Sydney

Crown House

The brief

A beach house, in stages.

Crown House was delivered in two stages. First, a new playroom replaced the existing porch — the family needed space now. Second, an upper level addition was designed in a similar architectural language to the front renovation, completing the vision when the budget allowed.

Staging a renovation is as much a design challenge as a construction one. Every early decision has to anticipate what comes next — structure, services, and aesthetic intent all had to be resolved from the start to make the two stages read as a coherent whole.

The result is a confident beach house that has grown in the right direction: up, into the Queensland sky, with a new bedroom level that captures the cross-ventilation Queenscliff is known for.

Two stages: first a new playroom replaced the existing porch, then an upper level addition in the same style completed the home.

Design story

The whole, in parts.

Few homeowners can afford to do everything at once — and often that's not the right approach anyway. Staging allows a family to live in the improved home before committing to further expenditure. At Crown House, each stage left the home complete and liveable.

The upper level addition, when it came, slipped into place as if it had always been there. The two stages share the same window proportions, the same cladding details, and the same relaxed coastal tone — because that consistency was designed in from day one.
