Brief

My clients owned 15 acres of partly cleared land and dreamt of a large ‘Revenge’ inspired country home. This Hamptons style home also needed to be thermally efficient and passive solar.

The house needs 4 Bedrooms plus a guest suite, two large living spaces, an open plan kitchen with butlers pantry, a three-car garage plus storage. Add to this an impressive entry, a large sunny rear patio / entertaining area overlooking a pool and beyond to their two dams.

Response

As the architect, my first thoughts were about orientation for the sun. We then found that by turning away from the road we could get north sun, views to the dam and a more meandering approach for visitors.

We designed the south side to be more formal with smaller windows and an impressive turning circle. Looking north, we designed large doors and windows opening up and flowing onto the ample outdoor patio, down to the pool and onto the flowing lawns.
