Pool House
The brief
Open, casual and flowing — around a pool.
Our clients love casual outdoor living and wanted a home that was as open and flowing as possible — with a pool as part of the design, not an afterthought. The street can get noisy, so they needed privacy and sound isolation to the front, along with a double garage and storage for bikes, boards and gear.
The response was a timber and zinc-clad contemporary facade facing the street, with just a couple of gates for security — no traditional front door. The pool sits on the north side in the middle of the site, central to the house. Sliding and stacking glass doors mean the indoor and outdoor spaces dissolve into one another throughout the day.
The design thinking
The pool as the organising idea.
Putting the pool in the centre of the plan rather than at the back fundamentally changed how this home works. It becomes a courtyard house — every room oriented inward to the water, with the pool providing light, reflection and the sound of water throughout.
The private street facade is a deliberate counterpoint: the outside world is kept at bay by the timber and zinc skin, so the interior feels like a private resort from the moment you arrive.
